Mr. Prithvi Raj Sawhney, newly elected Mayor of Delhi has presently been discharging responsibilities as Chairman, Education Committee since his re-election to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2007. Prior to the present stint, he also remained Member of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi from 1997-2002 and held various important posts including those of Chairman, Standing Committee, Conservancy, Sanitation and Engineering Committee and Health Committee. He epitomizes honestly, integrity and dedication. Shri Prithvi Raj Sawhney is one such person in whom these virtues find a harmonious blend in proper proportions. He represents ward No. 118, Janak Puri (South) of the West Zone of MCD.
Shri Sawhney was born in a simple family in the year 1942 in village Khandui in Jammu & Kashmir. He was a sharp witted student who started his academic journey and Jammu College (B.Sc.), went to Allahabad University for M.Sc. (Physics) and topped in spectroscopy. He taught in Jammu College and in different schools of Directorate of Education for 30 years. He sought voluntary retirement when he was working as Vice-Principal in Hastsal to devote his time completely to social life of the community and remembered even today in the schools where he worked.
Shri Sawhney honourably discharged his responsibilities entrusted to him as Organizing Secretary and later as President of Delhi Adhyapak Parishad (Govt. Wing). He was arrested many times while participating or leading the struggle for the welfare of the teaching community and was suspended from services but all these punitive measures motivated him to work with more vigour and enthusiasm.
In 1997 Shri Sawhney was elected as a Corporator from Ward No. 17 of Janak Puri. He was the Chairman of C.S.E Committee of the MCD in 1997-98. He was the Chief Whip of BJP Party in the Corporation and was the Chairman of Health Committee of the Corporation in 1998-99.
Valuing his style and efficiency, Shri Sawhney was appointed the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Corporation in 2000-02 and he acquitted himself honour, winning the applause and appreciation from all quarters including the members of opposition party.
In short, Shri Prithvi Raj Sawhney is a devoted leader with blemishless character. He is a role model for all to follow, a moving inspiration who has the welfare and happiness of all as his dream. He is a fluent speaker and above all a person who makes every one proud of his association.
