The objective of the HEALTH DEPARTMENT of Municipal Corporation of Delhi is to provide Health care facility for the population residing in the territory of MCD in holistic manner i.e. Preventive, Curative, Rehabilitative, and Training, Research. Though a large number of agencies are involved in medical & health care programmes of Delhi , the HEALTH DEPARTMENT of MCD is the main agency for carrying out preventive health care services in its jurisdiction. The preventive programmes are Water borne and vector borne Disease control programmes. The department has been devided into two functional units called Hospital Administration and Public Health Administaration.
Public Health Wing formulates different strategies and policies. The Public Health Work encompasses major activities like Control of water and vector borne diseases, Regulating food establishments and Monitoring Food Hygiene in Delhi, Rabies Control Programme, Management of Cremation grounds, Registration of Births and Deaths, AIDS Control programme,Although there are a large number of agencies such as Central Govt., Delhi government, ESI, Voluntary agencies and Private organizations involved in Medical & Health care programmes in Delhi, Health Department of MCD is the main agency organizing preventive health care / public health programmes in its jurisdiction.
The objective of the hospital administration wing of the health department is to organize comprehensive health care facilities with out-reach services for the community a holistic manner. The Director Hospital Administration (D..H.A.) . is the overall in charge of the hospital administration wing. The constituent units under DHA are Major Hospitals, colony hospitals, dispensaries, health centers, maternity homes, chest clinics and DOT centers, mobile dispensaries.
Six major hospitals are being managed by the M.C.D. There is a unique combination of hospitals. One of them is 1155 bed TB hospital, the 227 bed I.D. hospital is the only Infectious Disease Hospital of Delhi, the 450 bed Kasturba Hospital is meant for only females and children, the 97 bed GLM hospital is a maternity hospital. SDN Hospital is a 230-bedded modern super specialty Hospital. Hindu Rao Hospital has evolved from a 127-bedded hospital in 1952 to its present stature of 980-bedded referral hospital. The hospitals are well equipped with high tech. equipment and trained staff.
