The objective of the HEALTH DEPARTMENT of Municipal Corporation of Delhi is to provide Health care facility for the population residing in the territory of MCD in holistic manner i.e. Preventive, Curative, Rehabilitative, and Training, Research.
Though a large number of agencies are involved in medical & health care programmes of Delhi , the HEALTH DEPARTMENT of MCD is the main agency for carrying out preventive health care services in its jurisdiction. The preventive programmes are Water borne and vector borne Disease control programmes.
There are Six major hospitals managed by M.C.D. These includes 2- general hospital, 1-Tuberculosis , 1- Infectious Disease, 1-Hospital for mother &child and 1- Maternity hospital . The Bed strength of hospitals are Hindu Rao Hospital - 980, Swami Dayanand hospital- 230, R.B.T.B. Hospital - 1155, Infectious Diseases Hospital- 227, Kasturba Hospital- 450 & Mrs. G.L. Maternity Hospital -97.
DNB courses are being organized in Hindu Rao Hospital and Kasturba Hospital in collaboration with Delhi University . In addition to this M.D. and Diploma in Anaesthesia, Paediatrics and Obst. & Gynae. are organized in these institutions. RBTB Hospital is also a teaching and training institution for MD ( TB & chest ) and DTCD. The major hospitals are recognized for internship, house job , senior resident etc Two Nursing schools attached to Hindu Rao Hospital and Kasturba Hospital.
The department organizes primary health care through a battery of 50- Dispensaries, 2-poly clinics, 6- colony hospitals and 5- primary health centres ( 47 beds )and 16- mobile dispensaries. Nursing students and Student from Medical colleges & nursing colleges are being posted to PHCs for Training in community Health. The department is also responsible for organizing health care facility during disasters (natural - flood, fire), rallies, riots , sport meets , Religious congregation and National / State level functions organized in Delhi.
MCD is providing MCH& FW services to the general public through a net work of 23- Maternity Homes having 300 beds , 109- MCH centres, 50-Sub- Centres, , 07-PP Units &11- mobile units. In addition to this 26 ICDS Projects are also functioning. Indian population Project ( IPP - VIII ) is a world bank aided project started in 1993. It is being implemented under over all control of M.C.D. to provide MCH & Family Welfare services for about 12. lakh slum dwellers( app.) through a net work of 6- Maternity Homes( 90 beds ) , 21 Health Centres and 105 health posts. Different care being provided are Ante Natal Care, Post Natal care, Immunization, Family planning , Family welfare.
The department organizes Tuberculosis programme through 10- Chest clinics , 3- clinics with 107 observatory beds and implements the RNTCP programme through its chest clinics and opened up 140 DOT centres through out Delhi.
School health services provide comprehensive health care to all the children studying in Municipal Corporation Schools . There are approximately 9 lac children going to MCD primary schools and 12 zonal units of school health services cover them.
Services in Indigenous Systems of medicine are being organized Ayurveda Homeopathy, and Unani systems of medicines. This is being organized through 2- Ayurved Hospital with 140 beds, 104 dispensaries, 19-homeopathy dispensary, and 15-unani dispensaries and Panch Karma.
There are 2 electric crematoria & 7 major cremation grounds are run by MCD , 19 funeral vans are available for public.
The Births and Deaths Registration are being organized by B.H.I. Unit of the Department through 191 centres in 12 Zones This Includes 11 cremation grounds, 137 in urban area & 50 in rural area and 4- Centers at MCD Hospital.
